This isn't an answer to the question, but it's very pertinent to audio books: I was initially very frustrated because it didn't play the files of a book in the correct order. After upgrading to the latest firmware (very easy once I thought of it), files play in the correct order. Also if your using MP3 files like I do (rather than using audible), you probably want to create a top level folder named Audiobooks so the play recognizes this is a book rather than music.

I still have my Creative Zen Style, which was the best (it had an actual bookmark menu where you could save up to ten bookmarks), but those are no longer available, and I haven't found any others that have this function. I guess they expect everybody to listen to audiobooks on smartphones, but I find that a TERRIBLE way to do audiobooks for a variety of reasons.

Anyway, this Sandisk is currently your best bet for audiobooks, but here are some tips. After quite a bit of testing, I determined that what the Sandisk has is not really a bookmark function but a "resume" function. This function ONLY works in the Audiobooks folder and only if you enter through the "Books" icon at the beginning. If you then go to the file you were listening to and click it, a menu will come up asking if you want to Resume or start at the beginning. Again, this only works if you come in through the Books icon into the Audiobooks or Audible folders. It will NOT work in the Podcast folder, so if you want to resume podcasts, just save them in the Audiobooks folder. You can make subfolders within the Audiobooks folder.

What about the library downloads on Overdrive? This device will accept them, just be sure you save them in the Audiobooks folder. When transferring, you need to go to the "advanced options" where you can designate a folder for the download to be saved. I also set up a subfolder with the book's title. Since these books come on multiple "disks", you will have to remember which disk you were on, but the "resume" function should work when you click on that disk. It is also possible to delete a disk after you have finished listening to it so that the current disk comes up first. To delete a disk (or any file), press the menu button, i.e. the down button, while the file is playing and a menu will come up giving you the option to delete that file.

As for Audible books which have their own proprietary system, this is one of the relatively few brands that supports them. They will be saved in the Audible file and should also resume at the point left off.

As far as I can tell, none of the Asian knockoffs being sold on Amazon have an audiobook bookmarking or resume function that's worth a damn. Not sure why audiobook listeners are being so neglected by the market, but I'm buying a few of these Sandisks while they are still available. see less

It only seems to remember the current book you are listening to. Return to a book you were part way through after starting another book, and you are back to track 1.

Yes. If you pause or power off, it will resume from your last point. There is no feature (as with the old Rio Forge or some others) to drop up to 10 permanent bookmarks at specific points though. As long as you keep your audiobooks in the "Audiobook folder", the device only remembers both the File and the Position within each book. And, if you switch to music... the info is saved for the book.

Most of the time. After commection to computer mine often gets reset, so it's frustrating (not sure if cause is device or the desktop Audible program). Also, it's REALLY slow to start playing again.

No, this player absolutely does not remember your place in an audiobook. It goes back to Track 1 every time. I HATE this player. My Sansa Clip was awesome.

Yes. You can pause and it will be there next time. If you lose your place, as long as you find the section or chapter of the book you were on, it will resume in the exact spot.
